A company strategy covers quite a few topics ranging from market presence and product innovation to production and delivery. But not all strategic building blocks will have the same implementation complexity, nor will they have the same contribution to the overall success of the strategy.
EVALUATE EACH STRATEGIC BUILDING BLOCK
Therefore, the top team needs to test and evaluate each building block of the strategy very carefully. This doesn’t necessarily need to lead to a complex exercise. By answering the following three questions in an honest way for each of the strategic cornerstones, you can come a long way:
- How much chance do we have of winning that particular strategic battle?
- How important is it that we win that battle?
- How difficult will the execution be to implement what we want?
AN EXTRA DIMENSION
Evaluating the level of confidence concerning each of the strategic building blocks gives an extra dimension to the ‘clean’ words that are on paper. And this extra dimension helps the top team tremendously to prepare implementation with more focus and, even more importantly, with realism.
