Skills don’t grow on trees

Being able to do what your competitors can’t, demands a unique set of capabilities. But these skills don’t just grow on trees or arrive courtesy of the incredible ‘competence fairy’. They demand:

  • Tough choices: you can’t be good at everything.
  • Long-term commitment: it doesn’t happen overnight.
  • Motivated people: learning new skills demands effort and a change of behaviour.

Think about the following: “Developing people in a classroom is a cost. It becomes an investment when they start applying what they learnt on-the-job. It only becomes a success the moment it has a positive impact on (performance) what the job actually needs to achieve”
