WHY AI STRATEGY STARTS IN THE BOARDROOM
In a recent conversation on the Strategy and Leadership Podcast by SME Strategy, we explored one of the biggest questions leaders face today:
How do you integrate AI into strategy without losing sight of the fundamentals of business and leadership?
One of the key ideas from the conversation was that strategy itself has not fundamentally changed. At its core, strategy is still about making choices:
- where you want to play;
- how you want to win;
- and what you deliberately choose not to do.
The difference is that organizations now have a completely new technological layer to take into account: AI.
During the podcast, we discussed a simple framework built around three levels of AI strategy:
1. Augmentation
Using AI to support people and improve individual productivity, thinking and decision-making.
2. Automation
Using AI to improve processes, reduce friction and create additional customer value.
3. Aspire
Using AI to rethink business models entirely and create new forms of value that were previously impossible.
AI can not be delegated
One of the most important points in the discussion was that AI strategy should not be delegated purely to IT departments or external experts.
The boardroom must lead.
That does not mean executives need to become technical experts overnight, but they do need enough understanding and confidence to make strategic decisions about how AI impacts their organization, positioning and future business model.
We also explored how AI can help organizations:
- identify patterns faster;
- improve strategic analysis;
- personalize services;
- and rethink customer experiences in entirely new ways.
The organizations that will benefit most from AI are unlikely to be the ones using the most tools.
They will be the organizations whose leaders combine:
- strategic clarity;
- organizational understanding;
- and the willingness to continuously learn.
AI as a strategic amplifier
Because in the end, AI is not a replacement for strategy.
It is an amplifier of strategic thinking.
